Quakers Hill. $57 million investment

Construction has begun at the Quakers Hill Wastewater Treatment Plant as part of a $57 million investment to reduce wet weather overflows. Sydney Water MD, Kevin Young, said the community was set to benefit from the works, which will significantly improve the operations of the network and plant during wet weather. The Quakers Hill upgrade is expected to be complete by mid-2013.

Region. City too spread out

A new report rating 70 cities by the Economist Intelligence Unit may be little comfort to the Premier, Barry O'Farrell, who is encouraging more growth on the fringes of Sydney, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. James Weirick, the UNSW director of urban development and design, said Sydney was too spread out as a city, causing problems with livability, public transport accessibility and pollution from motor vehicles. ''The policy of facilitating growth on the periphery is seriously mistaken,'' he said. ''Sydney will only get better with higher density in the right places.''

Liverpool. Health research forum

The Ingham Institute is partnering with The South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) for the second annual SWSLHD Allied Health Research Forum to be held on September 21, at Liverpool Hospital. The theme will be "Building research capacity to keep our community healthy" focussing on bringing together all of the researchers in the south west and celebrate their collaborative work by showcasing new medical breakthroughs and treatment outcomes in the area.

Liverpool. Fundraising manager

The Ingham Institute is currently seeking a fundraising manager to develop and lead the fundraising arm of the institute. The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years experience within a similar role The Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research will shortly be housed in a new, purpose built research facility funded by the Australian Government and constructed on the grounds of the newly extended Liverpool Hospital soon to be the largest hospital in the southern hemisphere. It will act as a focus for both new research, and for research currently being conducted at Liverpool, Campbelltown, Bankstown, Fairfield and Bowral hospitals.
