Region. Trends in UWS enrolments

The University of Western Sydney says the popular picks among students in these uncertain economic times are for courses that are likely to have strong career prospects in a tighter job market. Trends include: policing and forensic science; construction management; business; teaching; psychology; medicine; nursing; health-related fields, combined law studies, communication and information technologies and visual communication. Some 83 per cent of the university's main round offers are to students from the region.

Sydney Olympic Park. More train services

The Sydney Olympic Park Authority is working with RailCorp to investigate increasing the frequency of the “Sprint” train service between the park and Lidcombe station to 10 minute intervals during peak hours.

Rooty Hill. OneSteel stops production

OneSteel has stopped production at its Sydney Steel Mill, at Rooty Hill, and at the Whyalla blast furnace as much as possible and will cut output from its Laverton mill in Victoria, after the demand for steel fell by 24 per cent in December. OneSteel confirmed the move would result in contractor and casual job losses, but did not provide a figure according to The Australian Financial Review
